The Channel thesis

The book market's bottleneck
is contact, not supply.

This is the working logic behind Channel: why the first product is a bounded campus pilot, and why a small physical node could become more than a printer or vending machine.

Reading intent is a moment.

Most books are already searchable. Many can be ordered in seconds. The harder problem is the short-lived intention that appears between classes, during a wait, after a conversation, or when a difficult question becomes personally relevant.

If the physical reading object is distant, that intention has to survive delivery time, another trip, and many competing demands. Channel begins by asking whether the object can instead meet the reader inside the route where the intention appears.

AI changes what reading is for.

AI can already retrieve, summarize, translate, and explain large amounts of text. As machine output becomes abundant, direct attention to trusted sources—and the judgment formed through that attention—becomes relatively scarcer. That substitution is not uniform. Paralloff uses a simple working model to distinguish three reading purposes:

Training

Reading optimized for tests and measurable performance. AI substitutes strongly.

Utilitarian

Reading optimized for rapid application. Search and AI substitute strongly.

Meaning

Reading through which people form judgment, identity, emotion, and worldview. AI can explain the text, but does not automatically replace the experience.

A working company thesis, not an established universal taxonomy.

Why physical paper still matters.

Paper creates a mode switch. It removes the text from the same screen that holds messages, feeds, alerts, and every other available action. It is spatial, easy to mark, visible in a room, and capable of remaining present without asking for attention.

Channel does not claim that paper is always better. It tests a narrower proposition: when a person wants sustained physical reading, immediate and well-designed access can change whether the reading happens.

Place, repetition, habit, and culture.

A physical node has a property an app does not: it can become part of a place. Students can pass it repeatedly, see what is available, notice other people using it, and build a shared expectation that reading objects belong on that route.

This is why the first expansion unit is one campus, not a city. Density and repeated contact inside a bounded community matter more than nominal geographic coverage.

Paper as an input surface.

The first product promise is physical access. The longer-term question is whether the marks people choose to retain—highlights, questions, page references, and reflections—can remain attached to the source while the paper stays usable as paper.

A future continuity layer could let a reader recover approved reading objects and the records they deliberately choose to keep across sessions. Those marks could remain connected to a visible passage without turning private attention into an extractable default asset. This remains a long-term direction, not a current pilot capability.

Original text, provenance, and permission.

AI assistance should lead back to the source. Translation, explanation, and connection become more useful when the original passage, license, edition, and transformation remain visible.

The same boundary applies to reading records. Private notes are private by default. Retention, interpretation, or sharing should begin with an explicit reader choice, not with a claim that interior attention is a resource to extract.

How a physical network can compound.

More well-placed nodes could create more reading contact. More contact could become real use. Use could improve placement, language options, local catalog decisions, uptime, and servicing. Reliable operations and transparent attribution could earn stronger relationships with sites, authors, and rights holders. Those relationships could deepen the authorized catalog and support denser placement—making the next encounter more useful.

That sequence is a hypothesis. The first pilot exists to test the first links independently and to reveal where the loop breaks. If it works, the accumulating assets are not a feature list. They are location relationships, operating knowledge, authorized catalog access, and reader and partner trust.

The question Paralloff is trying to answer.

In an era when AI can summarize almost anything, which original works will people still choose to encounter directly? Which questions, judgments, and reflections will they carry from those works into their lives?

Channel starts with a deliberately smaller test: put one useful, source-visible physical reading object in the right place, and see whether the reader comes back.
